EMG/NCS

Electromyography (EMG) & Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)

At Northwest Neurology & Electrodiagnostic Center, we offer Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) to accurately diagnose and evaluate nerve and muscle disorders.

These tests help identify the source of symptoms such as pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling by assessing nerve and muscle function.

What is EMG?

Electromyography measures the electrical activity of muscles at rest and during contraction. This test helps detect abnormalities in muscle function and can reveal conditions affecting:

  • Muscles
  • Nerve connections to muscles (neuromuscular junctions)
  • Motor neurons that control muscles

Common Conditions Diagnosed with EMG:

  • Muscle Disorders – Muscular dystrophy, polymyositis
  • Nerve Disorders – Radiculopathy (pinched nerve), peripheral neuropathy
  • Neuromuscular Disorders – Myasthenia gravis, ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)

What is NCS?

Nerve Conduction Studies measure how well electrical signals travel along nerves. Small electrodes are placed on the skin to stimulate the nerve and record how fast and effectively the nerve responds.

Common Conditions Diagnosed with NCS:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Guillain-Barré Syndrome
  • Nerve Compression or Damage

What to Expect During the Test

  • EMG: A small needle electrode is inserted into the muscle. You may feel slight discomfort, but the procedure is typically well tolerated.
  • NCS: Electrodes are placed on the skin, and small electrical pulses are sent through the nerve. This test may cause a mild tingling sensation.
